Abstract

The alcohol sector has always had great prominence in the Brazilian economy since the colonial era, however, despite its importance and tradition, it has been criticized regarding the negative environmental impact that its processes and steps lead to the production environment. Over time, new laws have arisen for the purpose of regulating all these activities aiming at preventing and reducing environmental impacts, as the alcohol sector requires many resources, inputs and also various waste dumps in nature. Concomitantly with the emergence of new environmental laws, the sugarcane mills have adopted environmental practices in order to improve the environmental performance of their production processes , as an opportunity for strategic differentiation and also to comply with the new legislation. In this context, the purpose of this research project is to analyze the environmental performance of processes of eight sugarcane mills located in the city of Sertãozinho, State of São Paulo, which belong to the basin of the river Mogi Guaçu. For this work of analysis will be produced a methodological framework for assessing the environmental performance specific to this sector. Next, will be conducted a data collecting in field for the later stages of analysis and discussion of results. (AU)
