Abstract

This research aims to study the performance of the justice of the peace in the city of São Paulo, between the years 1827 to 1844, a subject little studied to date. The justice of the peace was a project undertaken by the liberals who sought to reform the judiciary. The institution had a great impact on social and political life of the period, generating a heated debate between conservatives and liberals, especially in years of the Regency. It is central, therefore, to study its social role in elections and in their everyday functions. We will seek to examine who were the men who occupied the office, paying attention also to the form of action and relationship with the locality. The time frame allows you to pass the most significant reforms that the office suffered, the years of 1832 and also 1841, thus aiming not only to analyze the reforms, but also how they were received by the judges and how they were reflected in his performance. We intend to study the justice of the peace in its concrete dimension to contribute to a better understanding of the liberal project that took place in the "laboratory of the nation" that was the regency period.
