Abstract

This project aims to understand the process of urban expansion, taking into account the urban structuring agents that conduct this process and segment public policies at the local and regional levels. We selected the city of Monte Sião, located in southern of the state of Minas Gerais, geographical microregion of Pouso Alegre, close to the state of Sao Paulo, and considered the "National Capital of Knitwear". Our hypothesis is that the focus of investments of the local population has become the market land, promoting an accelerated expansion of the urban area from the late 1970s, attracting a large population of other states in Brazil. This happened mainly after the decline of rural activity in Monte Sião and the consolidation of a new economic activity with expertise in the production of knitwear and diversification of the textile sector driven by tourism. The development of this new economy in the city led to a rapid expansion of urban area and it increased the value of urban land, thus promoting a new structuring of the urban land. As a result, we expect to quantify the expansion of the city of Monte Sião, using current legislation as support, as well as investigate the axes of the city's urban expansion and the influence of socioeconomic and political-institutional aspects.
