Abstract

Brazil has presented in the 80's and 90's economic growth rates substantially lower than those presented by other emerging economies. Despite Brazilian rates have risen since 2004, this change is partly attributed to a favourable scenario, of high commodities prices. The new theories of economic growth highlight the relevance of investment in technology to reach long run sustainable growth. However, Brazilian performance in expenditure on R&D is reasonably low if compared to other countries. Schumpeterian growth theories and theories on international trade highlight the importance of creating a favorable environment to R&D investment, through stimulus to market competition, which can be boosted by trade openness. Therefore, this work intends to empirically evaluate the impact of international competition faced by Brazilian firms on their decisions concerning R&D investment. A model relating the relevant variables will be built, and econometric panel techniques will be adopted, using industrial databases, such as PIA and PINTEC. (AU)
