Abstract

Our study aims to seek the origins of Winckelmann's thoughts to then search for his originality. We intend to research the artistic horizon in which Winckelmann became an authority. To do that we have to read the author's own texts. Following its constructions both in two levels: what we might call the historical horizon - or the universe is contained in both editions of his "History of Art" and "Thoughts on antiquity and in imitation of the Greeks in painting and sculpture" - and the theoretical horizon - contained in texts such as "About allegory", "The grace in the work of art" and others. This double act of Winckelmann, will become one in their descriptions of art. Before the works of art are called to act by Winckelmann, the historical horizon of his conception of art and its basics theoretical assumptions, the notion of the human spirit and nature, will establish both a historical and an aesthetical way to approach the arts in its inner crafts.
