Abstract

Maize crop (Zea mays L.), when compared to others, has much more possibility of producing seeds with high physiological potential, given its morphological and chemical constitution and the advent of hybrid maize. In addition, harvesting and drying are key steps in preserving the quality of seed. Several changes may occur in seeds during desiccation, such as changes in membrane lipids composition, accumulation of soluble sugars, synthesis of heat shock proteins, such as LEA ("late embryogenesis Accumulated") and activities of antioxidant systems. Thus, this research aims to study the reciprocal efect (parental lines behaving as female and, or male) of parental lines on the physiological potential of the resulting hybrid seeds and determine whether there is relationship between the biochemical changes that occur seeds, resulting from the process of desiccation, and physiological potential, and see which these changes are influenced by time of harvest and the drying temperature of the seeds in order to maintain the physiological potential.
