Abstract

The role of research in the development of new technologies is essential to increase the efficient evaluation of the seed physiological potential in quality control programs of seed companies. The objectives of this research are to evaluate the physiological potential of maize seeds using automated systems based on seedling image analysis (SVIS® and Vigor-S softwares) in comparison to the information from other accepted methods for vigor evaluation of this species, including the salt solution accelerated aging (SSAA) with NaCl. Seeds of two hybrids represented by six lots each will be used. Evaluations of germination, cold test, traditional accelerated aging, SSAA and field seedling emergence will be performed in three experimental times. For seed vigor evaluation by seedling image analysis three-day-old seedlings will be evaluated by the Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®), developed by Ohio State University/USA and the results will be compared with those from the Automated Analysis of Seed Vigor (Vigor-S), developed by USP/ESALQ and Embrapa Agricultural Instrumentation (CNPDIA). Data will be submitted to analysis of variance in a completely randomized experimental design, except for field seedling emergence, which will be analyzed in randomized blocks. Mean results will be compared by the Tukey's test (p d 0.05). For each evaluation time, data will be separately analyzed for each physiological potential test and hybrid.
