Abstract

This project will be developed within the FAPESP Thematic Project 2011/07342-9, "The transatlantic circulation of printed matter - the globalization of culture in the 19th century", coordinated by Márcia Azevedo de Abreu, in which the professor responsible for the scholarship, Lúcia Granja, participates as collaborator. In this paper, from finding a quick and important circulation of the printed matter between Europe and America in the 19th century, we will outline a new understanding of the relationship between Literature and journalism in Brazil at that time. As corpus of this paper, we elected as snippets certain periods of circulation of the Journal of Commerce [Jornal do Commercio], compared to some of the great contemporary French periodicals. From the Brazilian periodical, we will analyze the rubrics, or the distribution and typology of journalistic and literary texts therein published, and we will seek to understand the function of the rubrics, the discussed subjects, the relationship between text and spatial arrangement on the newspaper's page, among others. In our analysis of the material, we will start from the idea that the writing of the daily newspaper defines a "poetic of the everyday", that will be responsible for many of the transformations of literary genres and forms in 19th century (THÉRENTY, 2007, p. 26).
