Abstract The practice of breastfeeding in the premature child has peculiarities which, if not properly managed will favor the early weaning before discharge from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the lived at home after this discharge. The present study aims to examine the experiences of early feeding adopted by the family during the first month after discharge from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, characterizing breastfeeding the premature child is experienced by the family, and so propose interventions on it. Adopted as a theoretical approach the Symbolic Interactionism and selects the qualitative method by emphasizing the knowledge and understanding of events and situations. The data collection will be developed through semi-structured interviews, focusing on the practice of breastfeeding and the interactional processes experienced in decision making about the same, both times of the staying in the care unit, as the ones lived at home. The results aim to understand the family experience in the practice of breastfeeding in the premature child at the time of discharge from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and lived at home, in order to generate theoretical benefits for the construction of an intervention strategy aimed at the comprehensive care of the families in this situation.
