Reverence and confrontation: the legacy of João Cabral de Melo Neto in the Armando Freitas Filho's poetry

Abstract

The contemporary poetic production reveals great identification with the modernists. If this affinity is often revealed as mere "retradicionalization" (SIMON, 2011), in which the poets make use of forms, techniques and procedures of conciliatory mode, showing a reading more tribute than criticism, however, in some cases, the dialogue with the modernism takes turns between convergences and conflicts, alliances and breaks with the poetics of masters like João Cabral, Carlos Drummond, Manuel Bandeira and Murilo Mendes, among others. Consolidated and mature poet, Armando Freitas Filho inserts in this second trend of contemporary Brazilian poetry, formed by poets that seek get rid of the weight of tradition, to follow a singular path. João Cabral de Melo Neto is one of the leading poets with whom Armando Freitas Filho establishes a relationship of permanent tension. Without rejecting the apparent affiliation of his poetry to a Cabral's tradition, Freitas Filho don' hide the historical specificities in that is inserted and struggle to find his own diction. As heir to a legacy, he refuses the role of mere follower. So, his poetic, deeply inserted in modernism, is a mixture of reverence and confrontation, of praise and criticism to this tradition, exposing the impasse between non-break and not to repeat the master. Through interpretative analysis of certain themes, motifs, and formal procedures, present in the metalinguistic poems Fio Terra (2000), by Armando Freitas Filho, this project aims to investigate how the poet reacts and dramatizes, in the space of language, his attitude of permanent challenge facing the poetic of João Cabral, in order to assess the impact of Cabral's inheritance in his work.(AU)
