Abstract

This project's aim is to identify the existence of a "family" of Latin American intellectuals who could be identified by the combination of nationalism, anti-imperialism, the defense of radical structural reforms, and the search for an original theory for the social realities of the sub-continent. My hypothesis is that these characteristics describe an ideological trend of authors that I call, freely using a Gramscian concept, "national-popular".To sustain the existence of such political-intellectual trend I intend to show its dialogue with Latin American authors who have joined Marxism. These authors would have been the main opponents of the left-wing nationalist trend in the dispute for the popular support in Latin America, labeling it as populist. So, in order to propose an adequate theoretical fundamentation, I intend to address also the extensive discussion of Latin America's Social Sciences about the concept of populism, trying to show its inadequacy for studying the history of ideas in the region and proposing as an alternative a more appropriate category: the "national-popular".
