Abstract

Currently, the number of patients who are diagnosed with some form of depression, including the major depressive disorder, increases considerably, both because of more accurate diagnoses or by the epidemiology of the disease. Add the fact that many patients, despite the number of types of antidepressants currently available for therapy, do not follow the prescribed treatment because of side effects presented, or their toxic effects, or due to simply not observe improvement with medication. As a result, new drug treatments are available, including: agomelatine, a melatonin receptor agonist MT1 and MT2, the same that behaves as an antagonist of 5-HT2C serotonin receptors; sertraline, the most potent and selective inhibitors of serotonin reuptake inhibitors; and venlafaxine, a potent and active reuptake of amines in the presynaptic neuron. To assist in the most efficient in its use, this paper proposes the development and validation analysis of agomelatine, sertraline, venlafaxine in human plasma by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), using liquid-liquid extraction and UV detection for subsequently be applied in monitoring of depressed patients, especially for agomelatine, a very recent antidepressant which the analytical methodology is practically nonexistent.
