Abstract

Tobacco consumption has originated in ancient America, spreading through Europe from 16th century and having lots of ways of consumption throughout the centuries, until the rising of cigarette in the middle of 19th century. Currently, around a third of world's population is smoker and more than five million of these people are led to death, by year, due to this habit. Nicotine is the active principle of tobacco and, as well as other potentially addictive substances, is able to change the organization of the central nervous system, favoring the installation of dependence condition. Some of the neuroadaptation developed with the chronic use of nicotine are related with the process of tolerance to its depressant effects and subsequent behavioral sensitization, which is common to all psychoactive substances and is characterized by gradual and longstanding increase in locomotor activity induced by repeated administration of drugs of abuse. Despite being well established procedures, as the tolerance to the depressant effects as the behavioral sensitization can either manifest or not, once there is a significant individual variability in this expression. Several factors are related with this individual variability, between psychological, biological and environmental. This project seeks to understand the factors who leads to behavioral sensitization and its relationship with the individual variability observed in this process. (AU)
