Abstract

Membranes are structural systems widely used in engineering. Most of the materials employed in these systems exhibit a multiscale structure, and the rigorous study of its mechanical behavior requires that all these scales be adequately considered. This post-doc research project aims to use the concepts of Micromechanics and Computational Mechanics to develop multiscale numerical strategies for the computational modeling of membranes. Especially, structural membranes and certain types of biological tissues are to be considered. The proposed approach is based on the mechanical characterization of each material scale, taking into account possible interactions between them. Homogenization methods are to be adopted and/or developed in order to arrive at macroscopic constitutive descriptions for the different membrane systems. These descriptions, in the form of constitutive equations, may be implemented within structural analysis computational tools (such as finite element analysis and design programs), and may also be used as predictive models in the computational design of new materials for membrane systems. This project also aims to motivate the starting of a new line of research within the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering of the University of São Paulo, which is, micromechanical and multiscale computational modeling for the development of new materials, with initial focus on (but not restricted to) membrane applications.
