Abstract

Current proposed project integrates a study that is being developed in the UNESP Aquaculture Center, Jaboticabal SP Brazil, at the Laboratory of Limnology and Plankton production. Partnership has been established with the Laboratory of Ornamental Fish so that knowledge on environmental conditions and feeding habits of ornamental fish breeding in freshwater, Betta splendens (REGAN), grown in the laboratory's external pond, could be analyzed. The process stage on limnological variant and zoological selection has already been accomplished although the statistical evaluation of field has still to be done. Amount of the planktonic community in water and the plankton in the digestive tract are important as the primary source of fish food and constitute a relevant device for assessing water quality. This is due to the fact that variations in nutrient concentrations determine alterations in the composition of aquatic biota. Ornamental fish industry is already well developed in several countries as an expensive and restricted market. The expansion of this aquaculture sector through an non-aggressive way to the natural ecosystems and which comprises aquatic biota (plankton) and feeding habits, implies in the improvement of the development of the fish species breeding in captivity.
