Abstract

Breast milk is the most suitable food, recommended for newborns at term and preterm infants because it contains more than 250 essential nutrients to the baby's health. Although it has numerous antibodies that help the immunity of the newborn, can also be a source of infection for the infant due to mother's infectious diseases. In addition, human milk does not provide protection itself, against contaminants from the environment, tools, and professional donor human milk bank. The micro-organisms are commonly isolated coagulase-negative staphylococci, Acinetobacter, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter sakazakii, Serratia sp., Proteus sp and Salmonella Typhimurium. The objective is to verify the quality of milk samples from the milk bank, by the enumeration and identification of Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus spp. Strains of this genera will be tested for the genes responsible for classical enterotoxin production and the production in vitro, using RPLA. In the routine of this bank, frozen samples from donors arrives on Mondays. On Wednesdays, the samples are thawed, pasteurized and frozen again. The fractionation occurs on Thursdays. Thus, 0.5 ml of each sample will be collected immediately after thawing prior to pasteurization. Equal volume will be collected after pasteurization and after fractionation. Samples will be collected throughout the week until the total of 100 samples (300, considering all stages). All results will be forwarded to the responsible unit.(AU)
