Abstract

Though there is a specific bibliography about the famous Portuguese Letters - first edited in 1669 - the studies that show the specificities of some information about the characters, the setting, the wars that were part of the loving drama - perhaps the most important loving drama of XVII century's literature and source of other love stories - are rare. The existent critical works are at times led by the defense of Nun of Beja and Marquis of Chamilly's relationship veracity, at times led by the literary fraud suspicion, which inevitably refers to the authorship matters. This project does not intend a conclusive position; however it seeks to approach the most to the historical elements, reviewers and editorials of the letters, and it wants to think its central matter: love.
