Abstract

Ostertagiinae nematodes (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae) are important herbivores gastric parasites. Because of their confused taxonomy due to the polymorphism of some species, there are differences in the generic composition of this group when comparing traditional keys with the latest articles. In the Neotropics, only a few species of the genus Mazamastrongylus are known. Of these, Mazamastrongylus tayassui nom. nud. still do not have a formal taxonomic description. This nematode, first described in free-ranging peccaries captured in the Brazilian Pantanal, was also diagnosed in peccaries from commercial farms with relevant indicators of infection, demonstrating a good establishment of the parasite to captivity conditions. The formal description of this nematode may contribute to the knowledge of the Neotropical biodiversity and is also essential to allow the development of further studies. (AU)
