Abstract

This project intend to analyze the circulation of mathematical knowledge in the First Brazilian Republic by through the comparative analysis of booth the mathematical contents engineering journals, his authors and other works which circulated in Europe, specially in France, from the second half of the nineteenth Century until the beginning of the Twentieth Century. A current research (Processo FAPESP: 2011/02213-6) has compiled many sources by the Brazilian side, papers that were mainly published in engineering journals, allowing the recovering of the mathematical practices in the period. In so doing, the main aim of the stage postulated hear is the analysis in their origin of the material corpus, used by these Brazilian scientists. This strategy would help to understand the social conditions which enable or not the reception of the modern theories of mathematics in Brazil. Other stage intentions are to deepen the analysis of the collected material having the collaboration of French researches, whose expertise is the analysis of scientific journals, and to visit historical archives which would add the comprehension of the studied actors.
