Abstract

On famous women (De claris mulieribus), a catalogue of female biographies written by Giovanni Boccaccio between 1361-1362, explores the mythical Greco-Roman universe, and portrays the life of notable (clarae) female figures of Late Antiquity. Great part of the studies about the work is marked by a dichotomic trend, which ranges from pointing towards a moralist character (Christian) or "merely" a literary one in the biographies. Erudite "researches of sources" (Quellenforschungen) from the catalogue are mainly associated to this type of reflexion: among them, there is the work from the Roman poet Ovid (43 B.C. - 17 A.D.). The main objective of this research is to direct restults of such studies in the sense of an investigation about the way how in the Boccaccian work in question Ovid's poetry is presented. And, moreover, to proceed with an investigation that has not been done yet - as far as we could verify: to explore the effects of meaning of such presence in the catalogue studied. In the comparison of the respective Latin texts, theories of intertextual line applied to Classical Studies will guide our interpretations from the selected passages, including the search of a deeper comprehension of the way how in the work in question the relation between morality and literature can be considered. Our hypothesis, supported by the results obtained in the Master's degree (2011), is that it will be useful to observe the way how the spectrum of relations among moral, poetry and rhetoric are presented in Ovid (Cardoso, 2005; Schiesaro, 2003), which reflects in the complex constitution of the author's ethos, recently associated to the one presented by Boccaccio in his other works (cf. Barchiesi; Hardie, 2010). (AU)
