Abstract

Castro Alves is a romantic Brazilian poet that hasn't been receiving scholars' attention lately. For the most part, this is explained by the technical fragilities of his work, explained by his usually hyperbolic vocabulary, and his poor rimes. In spite of this, we can find a rich work of not only romantic ideals but also a representation of his national reality at that time. These points of metapoetry and literature meeting with society deserve special attention. The focus of this research is basically these two points, which are represented, in great times, with the poetical picture of the bird. In this project, we propose to do an analysis of this image, to evidence how it figures, poetically, the romantic antithesis of liberty and oppression concepts.(AU)
