Abstract

The broader scope of the research currently in progress to which this project is realted is to understand Cuban loyalty to the Spanish monarchy and the subsequent maintenance of the colonial system on the island in a context of intense political change and reorganization in the Western world, a way that contrasts with the insurgency and separatist wars seen in many of the former Iberian colonial possessions in the New World. In this sense, the immediate goal is to analyze the news that circulated on the island - through the periodical press - with respect to two central themes: i) the struggles undertaken in Spanish America after the Napoleonic occupation on the peninsula that would lead to the independence of these territories and ii) slavery; articulate them in an attempt to unravel their interrelationships and how they contributed to the maintenance of colonial ties between Cuba and Spain. Thus, the probationary period here pleaded would allow acquisition of documentary sources that support the research as well as its continuation, and providing contact with professionals from Spain who are dedicated to the study of similar issues and literature production.
