Abstract

The Archaean is the most important period of crustal growth in the Earth's history. It is characterized by greater heat production and related higher geothermal gradients that favoured the genesis of rocks such as adakites and voluminous tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) plutonism. However, the tectonic setting of formation of these igneous suites is still a matter of much debate and several attempts have been made to decipher the tectonic setting on the basis of geochemistry. The most popular models are partial melting of mafic oceanic crust under pressures high enough to stabilize garnet, with or without interaction of the melt with the mantle wedge. The tectonic setting can be tested by using multi-dimensional diagrams. These diagrams are called multi-dimensional because each of the two x- and y-axes contains several log-ratio variables, being 10 for major-element based diagrams. This is major advantage of multi-dimensional discriminant-function-based diagrams over the conventional bivariate or ternary diagrams. In this proposal, multi-dimensional discrimination diagrams (Verma et al., 2012) will be used to decipher the dominant tectonic setting of Archaean igneous rocks from Brazilian cratons. Therefore, the novelty of my approach lies in the multi-dimensional solution as a complement to the ongoing research in Brazilian (Amazonian and São Francisco) cratons.
