Abstract This research will analyze the perceptual strategies used by Sweden listeners and Brazilian listeners who live in Sweden for speaker verification in Brazilian Portuguese speech samples in a vocal disguise situation.Samples of Brazilian Portuguese speech will be presented to the two groups of listeners with one vocal disguise followed by a line-up with the target non-modified voice randomly arranged with other five foils non-modified voices. The focus of the work is threefold: to evaluate the identification rate, to determine which type of information (acoustic and/or lexical) is used by the listeners during the speaker verification task and to make some considerations about the role of the acoustic memory in speakers and non-speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. It is known that the analysis of the perceptual strategies of native and non-native listeners has important implications for speaker verification since it allows a better understanding of the cognitive processes involved in cases of earwitness.
