Abstract

Bruxism is a topic of intense research in dentistry field and it is correlated to emotional factors and stress. This study aims to evaluate the tongue strength in bruxism patients, before and after therapy, with occlusal splints. For this purpose, 20 volunteers will be recruited from Piracicaba Dental School- UNICAMP and divided into two groups (1) volunteers with bruxism, and (2) volunteers without bruxism (control), selected according to inclusion criteria. Bruxism diagnosis will be carried out by clinical examination in order to identify signs and symptoms. After all volunteers will be submitted to measurements of maximum tongue strength using sensors. Thus, volunteers from experimental group will receive occlusal splints, as a treatment for bruxism, and volunteers from control group will receive a nonoccluding splint, and both groups will be instructed to use them during sleep. After 30 and 60 days of use, the maximum tongue strength will be again evaluated. The results will be submitted to exploratory data analysis for each variable and then apply the appropriate statistical test.
