Range of motion in older subjects with different levels of physical activity

Abstract

The range of motion allows to identify and quantify the joint limitations, diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders, assess function, prognosis, and monitor patient progress during rehabilitation. It is used as an indicator of flexibility and mobility in some studies and goniometry is the most used in clinical. This quantitative measure may be compromised due to factors such as those resulting from aging. The physiological changes that occur in aging are correlated with the lifestyle adopted by the individual. Some studies show that seniors who exercise suffer less decline in their physical skills and the ability to increase muscle strength and flexibility. The objective of this study is to quantify the shoulder range of motion in the elderly, as well as evaluate the overall flexibility of these individuals. The results will be compared between two groups of elderly (the physically active and not physically active) and with reference to a range of motion in young adults. Will be selected male physically active and not physically active, aged between 60 and 70 years. Will be used a universal goniometer, plastic, Carucci model, to measure the angles of flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction of the shoulder, lateral and medial rotation of the shoulder. The assessments will be repeated for reliability interrater and interrater. After goniometric evaluation will be performed to test the third finger-ground.(AU)
