Abstract

Physiotherapy and Kinesiotherapy techniques have been employed in the human medicine for a long time as auxiliary treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of several orthopedic conditions. Despite the lack of scientific researches in the veterinary medicine, the mentioned techniques have been applied on animals with good practical effects which are based on the existing outcomes from human medicine. The rehabilitation therapy for joint surgical procedures is rarely put into practice in the equine sports medicine and is currently deficient in studies and protocols establishment. The objective of the present study is to evaluate a rehabilitation protocol for the initial post-surgical period of metacarpo and metatarsophalangeal and tibiotarsal joints submitted to arthroscopy. The decrease of local inflammation, reduce of the edema formation, increase of joint mobilization and reduce of lameness are expected. A sample of 20 horses received at the Veterinary Hospital with the diagnosis of ostheocondritis dissecans will be considered. One group of 10 horses will receive the rehabilitation program (cryotherapy, passive motion and low intensity exercise) during the initial post-surgical period in addition to antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. The other 10 animals group will remain confined in the stall receiving just antibiotics and anti-inflammatory as the routine procedure of the hospital (HOVET-USP). The results will be analyzed inside and between the groups on different moments. The mean comparison will be done with ANOVA tests. (AU)
