Abstract

Ozone therapy consists of the application of medicinal ozone, a mixture of ozone and oxygen, which through reactive oxygen species and lipoperoxidation products exert different effects on the body, such as improvement of tissue oxygenation and metabolism, angiogenesis, increase of antioxidant mechanisms, improvement of the immune system, anti-inflammatory effect, among others. This therapeutic modality is already studied in Human Medicine and has been applied in equine Sports Medicine in the treatment of Osteoarthritis, but without studies that prove its efficacy. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of the application of intra-articular medicinal ozone in equines submitted to arthroscopy for the removal of osteochondral fragments through physical examination, ultrasonography, histopathology and analysis of synovial fluid. The hypothesis is that the use of ozone will decrease inflammation of the equine synovial joints and minimize surgical trauma, proving its anti-inflammatory effects. Twenty articulations (tibitarsic, metacarpal and metatarsophalangeal), referred to the Veterinary Hospital, will be used to remove fragments from Osteocoditis Dissecans (OCD). All animals will receive antibiotic prophylaxis with amikacin at a dose of 15 mg/kg/SID/IV for 5 days, and tramadol 3 mg/kg/TID and rescue dipyrone (22 mg/kg) will be used to control postoperative pain. The animals will be divided into two groups: treated group will be performed at the end of the surgical procedure laundering the joint with ozone gas at the concentration of 20 ¼g/ml for 5 minutes, after 48 hours will be collected synovial fluid and applied 5mls of ozone and 2 mls Of hyaluronic acid; In the control group will be performed at the end of the surgical procedure washing the joint with carbon dioxide for 5 minutes, after 48 hours will be collected synovial fluid and applied 2 mls of hyaluronic acid.
