Abstract

Ozone therapy is the application of medical ozone, a mixture of ozone and oxygen, which through reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation products exert different effects in the body as improved oxygenation and tissue metabolism, angiogenesis, increased antioxidant mechanisms, improves the immune system, anti-inflammatory, among others. This type of therapy is already widely studied in human medicine and has been applied in equine sports medicine in the treatment of osteoarthritis, but no significant studies prove their safety and efficacy. The aim of this study is to analyze the inflammatory and oxidation effects of the medical ozone in synovial joints of healthy horses. For that will be used 16 hocks distributed randomly into two groups. In the treated group will be three weekly applications of 15 ml of medical ozone at a concentration of 30 ug / ml for two weeks. In the control group, the joints will receive three weekly applications of 15 ml of O2 for two weeks. Physical and ultrasound tests will be performed as well as analysis of synovial fluid, including total count of nucleated cells and quantification of total protein, prostaglandin E2, interleukin 10 (IL-10), hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate. For antioxidant evaluation in synovial fluid will determine the catalase enzyme activity and concentration of vitamin E. (AU)
