Abstract

Online recognition of handwritten mathematical expressions is an important problem in the field of pattern recognition and its solution can, among other applications, facilitate inputting mathematical notation into computers. Although there exist several approaches to deal withthis problem, they are still limited with regard to the variety of symbol classes and expression types that can be recognized. Most of the approaches divide the recognition process into two independent steps: symbol recognition and structural analysis. On the other hand, it is known that contextual information, such as writing patterns, can be useful to solve ambiguities present both in symbol recognitionand in the determination of spatial relationship among symbols. Incorporating such information in the recognition process is, however, still a challenge. This research project aims to propose an approach that integrates the steps of symbol recognition and structural analysis for the online handwritten mathematical expression recognition problem. In special, it aims to investigate the use of contextual information for treating ambiguities and to propose efficient and systematic ways of using them in the recognition process. It is expected that the proposed approach will be able to recognize a largervariety of expression types, containing a larger variety of symbol classes. (AU)
