Abstract

Acoustic source localization is an important analysis tool for the improvement of modern vehicles and machinery. Inverse beamforming techniques are allowing new approaches and unprecedented detailing of acoustical sources. Despite the fact that these techniques are based on the conventional beamforming, they may possess different and unique characteristics for optimal configuration and minimal error. This research project aims at describing a formal procedure to search for the optimized generalized inverse beamforming configuration based on the geometric interpretation of the estimation error. This approach is new in the literature of inverse beamforming and introduces a mathematical foundation for decisions such as optimal phased array configuration, where the number of sensors and sensors distribution are examples of common questions to optimize resources. Another possibility is to optimize the target grid distribution, introducing a method to assess the grid spacing and total width influence on results. This method of configuration optimization will be illustrated with available experimental data, along with simplified numerical simulations. International conference papers and journal articles in collaboration with key expertise centers around the world are planed.
