Abstract

The bicudinho-do-brejo-paulista (Formicivora aff. acutirostris) is an endemic bird species of São Paulo State that was recently discovered in the region of Arujá, Salesópolis, Biritiba-Mirim and Mogi das Cruzes. It occurs in wild swamps and, specially due to the destruction of its habitat in order to built hydroelectric stations, forest fire, and introduction of exotic species, it is already classified as "critically in danger" in the Red List of São Paulo State. Conservation acts include the establishment of a conservation unit in the region where we can find the large population of the species (around 100 birds) and the monitoring of the existing populations. Due to the great fragmentation and reduction of its habitat, it seems that its populations can be isolated. Therefore, data on the genetic variability and distribution of this species are extremely important for its conservation. The aim of this study is to isolate and characterize microsatellite markers for F. aff. acutirostris, access the genetic variability of three populations (including the larger one), verify the level of divergence among the populations, and the proportion of migrate individuals. Therefore, we intend to infer if the populations should be considered as a single manage unit or different units.
