Abstract

This project contributes to contemporaneous studies on poverty, urban inequalities and social vulnerability, and has São Paulo city as locus of investigation. The objective is to investigate the relations amongst poverty and social vulnerability, life conditions and ways of life of individuals and domestic groups living in favela and public policies. The project has as object the interactions between the life courses of favela dwellers and their families, considering different situations of poverty and social vulnerability and their interaction with the favela upgrading program in course. Using a biographical approach, and the analysis of different individual trajectories - familial, work, residential, etc. -, and their intercrossing in the household level, I explore the dynamics of social conditions and ways of life, and how they are affected by the urbanization process. More specifically: showing that house is more than simply "a housing issue", I try to analyze how such a public intervention in private life represents an heuristic event to make problematic inequalities in poverty, its production and reproduction.
