Abstract

This project aims to analyze the intellectual production on slums and other forms of housing for the urban poor, both in social theory and in artistic manifestations, and to consider the reflexivity of these interpretations in social life and in the processes of collective action, bringing questions from the past closer to contemporary inquiries. It is proposed to discuss the use of the categories poverty, inequalities and vulnerability and the need to consider the multiple strategies of urban workers, among them, the option for housing in slums as an expression of their agency capacity in the face of the characteristics of social inequality and institutionalization of poverty in Brazilian society. Therefore, the proposed research is structured in three axes, which refer to: 1- production of systematic mapping and analysis of the debate in the sociological literature on social thinking related to urban poverty and slums, considering bibliographic sources and documentary collections; 2- systematic survey of social thought in a broad sense, involving essays on the interpretation of Brazil and artistic production, with emphasis on theater and analysis of the theatrical adaptation of Quarto de despejo and its reception at the time of production and 3- analysis of the experience of Complexo da Maré in the face of Covid-19.
