Abstract

It is assumed that approximately 13 to 19 million children are affected by malnutrition in the world and in Mozambique, East Africa, it is estimated that over 40% of children are affected by chronic malnutrition. In this study, reproduced in the laboratory the basic diet of the population of Mozambique (DM), we intend to evaluate its effects on the inferior alveolar nerve of Wistar rats. For this, pre and postnatal 21 days, the animals will be divided in the DM (which will be provided to a standard diet of Mozambique) and DMC (composed of animals submitted to DM plus 20% casein). After collected the jaws, the inferior alveolar nerve (NAI) will be dissected and subjected to routine histological techniques and electron microscopy. The density and the estimated number of myelinated nerve fibers of the NAI of the animals in each group (MD and CMD) are determined by the method stereological (disector dimensional - db). (AU)
