Abstract

Studies on basic biology of elasmobranchs allow to understanding the their role as apex predator. The present study aims to investigate the feeding habits of newborn and juvenile hammerhead shark, Sphyrna lewini, in the coastal area of São Paulo. The specimens will be sampled from artisanal fisheries along the coast, between Peruíbe and Guaruja. The sharks will be measured, weighed, sexed and their stomach removed. The contents, washed, screened, identified, measured and weighted. Are determined and the degree of fullness of each item of digestion. Stomach contents will be related to the length of the predator. The importance of each prey in the contents will be verified by Index of Relative Importance and range of ecological niches will be investigated using the standardized Levin index.
