Abstract

The microflora of bovine semen is characterized by complexity of microorganisms from bacterial, viral and fungi origin, opportunistic or pathogenic. From these opportunistics bacteria have been identified in semen of bulls predominantly Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Bacillus spp., Micrococcus spp., as well as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Semen contamination may occur also by systemic route by Brucella abortus, Leptospira spp., Chlamidophyla spp., and Mycobacterium spp, or by sexually transmitted diseases such as Campylobacter spp., Trichomonas foetus, Ureaplasma diversum, and other pathogens. Despite started Brazilian Program for Control and Erradication of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (PNCEBT) since 2001, a few studies in this country have focused the presence of B. abortus and mycobacteria in semen of bulls. The aim of present study is to investigate microflora of semen of bulls, with emphasis in B. abortus and Mycobacterium spp. occurrence.(AU)
