Abstract

Ceramic materials are usually bonded to metallic implants by means of an application of continuous layers. Such an application has inherent interface problems what should contribute to increasing bone-implant system failures. An existent proposal suggests the application of a layer with particles of biosilicate®, a highly bioactive glass, on a titanium surface. Such particles should be consumed at the beginning of the osseointegration process avoiding the late interface stability problems. According to GREENSPAN et. al., smaller Bioglass® particles - around 5µm - dissolve quicker than biggest particles, increasing the solution pH at the beginning of the dissolution. The first stages of the osseointegration process are key to the implant success in the medium and long term and this pH fluctuation could prejudice this process if it is higher than 9,0. This project suggests the evaluation of the titanium surface bioactivity as a function of biosilicate® particle size bonded to a titanium surface.(AU)
