Abstract Uncaria tomentosa (Willd.) DC., commonly known as "cat's claw", is a native plant of America, several medicinal properties, such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant are assigned to this plant. Due to this characteristics it is widely used, not only by the Brazilians but by the world population too. It's well known that the consumption of this plant occurs in nature, in form of teas, but mainly as a herbal medicine, formulations which are independent of medical prescription, so, mostly times, the consumption is indiscriminated by the population. Besides many studies reveal the therapeutics properties of Uncaria tomentosa, there are few studies that employ protocols established by international regulatory agencies to assess the possible toxic and immunotoxic effects of this herbal remedy. The objectives of the present study are to employ this protocols and evaluate if, indeed, the use of Uncaria tomentosa is safe for the worldwide population. | |
