Abstract

The paper analyzes the role of MPB in protest events in the final period of the military regime from 1977 to 1984. At this point, the MPB was present at concerts, rallies, TV, radio and sound trucks, packing demonstrations opposing the regime and election campaigns promoted by students, opposition parties, which stood out in the MDB, then PMDB, PT and PDT, labor movements, neighborhood movements, Amnesty and the Direct-Have. It was found that many artists such as Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gonzaguinha, Gilberto Gil, among others already established cast of MPB, were present in these demonstrations. Our goal is to understand the performances of these artists as political agents, their possible links with the opposition parties and the role of songs in the redefinition of political values and building a sense of belonging in the group opposed to the military regime.
