Abstract

The research objective is adapting a school based prevention program focused on alcohol misuse in adolescents aged 13 to 15 years. The research will consist of two studies: Study 1) Study the school context, different private schools São Paulo, in relation to characteristics considered relevant to implement a prevention program; Study 2) has to evaluate the process of implementing a program prevention pilot, adapted to local conditions, based on program McBride and colleagues (2004), which focuses on health promotion and reducing the risk of misuse of alcohol. The Study 1 will follow a qualitative methodology, using the focus groups technique and individual interview. It will be conducted separate groups with teachers, students and parents, and also interviews with pedagogical coordinators. Data is going to be analyzed by discourse analysis. The research design of Study 2 will be a controlled trial (quasi-experimental, with intervention and control groups). The school sample will be composed by eight schools, including four in the control condition and four in the experimental, involving a total of 500 students. Data collection will mix quantitative and qualitative methods. Qualitative data will cover the aspects of process implementation like quality of implementation, adequacy of intervention and the material (through the reports of principals, teachers and students). Quantitative data will assess the adolescent changes before and after intervention (eg. level knowledge, alcohol use, beliefs, consequences of alcohol use, risk perception of patterns of use, intention to use alcohol, context of use and leisure activities). Qualitative data will be analyzed by content analysis and quantitative data via statistical descriptive and inferential bivariate and multivariate analyzes. (AU)
