Abstract

A essential input for the chemical and petrochemical industry is ethylene, considering that it is mainly used as the raw material for the production of ethylene oxide, ethylene chloride, ethylbenzene, propionaldehyde and especially polymers and copolymers. Cracking of ethane, propane or butane and gas oil cracking are main source for ethylene production. The price per ton of ethylene rose with rising price of oil, making it attractive the search for alternative processes from cheaper sources. So, is inserts the proposal this project: ethylene production by natural gas (methane) partial oxidation. Methane reforming for syngas production and oxidation reaction of methane are the routes possible for the use of methane as a feedstock in chemical industry. There are several ways to oxidize methane and among them stands out the complete oxidation to CO2 and H2O, the partial oxidation to methanol and formaldehyde and the oxidative coupling reaction of natural gas. In this context, this project aims at the optimization of a modified spouted bed catalytic reactor to obtain ethylene via oxidative coupling of methane. The project will be theoretical and computational, using specific optimization software (GAMS). Thus, the fluid-dynamic and reaction model of the reactor will be developed first, and then will be optimized the best conditions of reactor operation for achieve a maximum selectivity of ethylene. We expect to contribute in this way with an improvement of the process, obtaining the most favorable reaction conditions of oxidative coupling of methane to produce ethylene.
