Abstract

This project proposes the design and construction of a spatial light modulator-based instrument to enable spectroscopy and microscopy measurements in turbid and opaque media inside high pressure cells, in order to study asphalthene precipitation from crude oils. Initially, instrumentation and software will be developed for spatial modulation of the phase of light, together with theoretical calculations of evolutionary and adaptive propagation of light through turbid and opaque media. This will be followed by implementation of dynamic focusing to improve imaging and spectroscopy, together with instrument calibration based on known systems and theoretical calculations. In the second half of the project, the instrument will be used to perform spectroscopy and microscopy measurements in asphalthene suspensions. The instrument will also be adapted to the high-pressure cell.
