Is the podoplanin associated to ezrin in process of invasion of ameloblastomas?

Abstract

The association between podoplanin and ezrin in the process of invasion of odontogenic tumors has been suggested but still was not studied. The purpose of this study is to investigate the expression of ezrin in the odontogenic epithelium of ameloblastomas and verify the possible relation between podoplanin and ezrin expression in this epithelium, contributing to the knowledge of the participation of podoplanin in the local invasion process of these tumors. The specimens will include patients submitted to the incisional biopsy or resection of ameloblastomas in the Department of Stomatology of the Bauru School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo, in Bauru, in the period from 1980 to 2009. The specimens are materials belonging to Laboratory of Pathological Anatomy of the above-mentioned department. Only patients with the diagnosis confirmed by the sum of the clinical data, radiographic and microscopic will be selected. The immunohistochemical expression of ezrin by ameloblastomas will be evaluated using a score method, based on the sum of the proportion and intensity of the tumor cells with positive immunostaining. To analyze the expression of podoplanin in the ameloblastomas, which will be confronted with the immunostaining of ezrin, it will be employed the same system of scores described above. The verification of the association between the expression of anti-podoplanin and anti-ezrin antibodies will be statistically verified through Mann-Whitney or Kruskal-Wallis test.(AU)
