Abstract

Survivin is an inhibitor of apoptosis protein that plays a role in cell cycle control and the mechanism of carcinogenesis. The aim of this study is to verify the clinicopathological correlation of survivin expression in exfoliative cytology of oral mucosa of patients with intra-oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) and chronic smokers and also of buccal mucosa after surgical removal of CCE. The research will have 02 groups of patients from the Service Center of Head and Neck at Pio XII Hospital, Sao Jose dos Campos. Group 1: 30 patients who have intra-oral OSCC, Group 2: 30 patients surgically treated with OSCC for at least 01 months; Group 3: 30 patients who smoke more than 20 cigarettes/day/10years not presenting the oral history of malignant neoplasm, or clinical signs visible at the site examined. Patients will be examined by medical history, extra and intra-oral clinical examination. The cytology will be performed with cytobrush to obtain two slides of each selected location. Primary antibody immunohistochemistry with anti-survivin antibodies will be analyzed semi-quantitatively by light microscopy. Statistical analysis will be performed by Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney and X2.(AU)
