Abstract

The process of doping has been widely used for the modification of physical and chemical properties of different materials and may lead to obtain new materials having new properties and applications. In nanocrystalline materials, the doping process has been also considered essential for stabilizing certain crystalline phases. The hydrothermal synthesis method has allowed the synthesis of materials on a scale ranging from nano to micron presenting different physical and chemical properties for the same materials obtained by other synthesis methods. Thus, the addition of doping process using a versatile synthesis methodology, shows to be a very interesting in order to understand the effect of doping on the physical properties of a particular material and to obtain a material having new properties. The objectives of this research project are the synthesis and characterization of the SrTiO3 compound pure and doped with Mn or Fe or Ni through the conventional and assisted by microwave hydrothermal method. It is expected through this projetc to be able to determine the effect of synthesis parameters (time and temperature), the introduction of dopants and the use of microwave or not the process of nucleation, growth and physical properties of these compounds. The verification of the effects by changing the synthesis parameters and the introduction of dopants in the structural and morphological properties of the materials will be achieved by the use of traditional characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and advanced characterization techniques as X-ray absorption spectroscopy , scanning and trasmission electron microscopy. It will also characterized their electrical properties in order to verify the sensitivity of these materials to different kinds gases and their evaluation concerning the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes. These results will be correlated with the structural characteristics of the materials. It is expected that the end of work have improved the understanding of the effects of processing the hydrothermal method and the effect of doping on the properties of these compounds.
