Abstract

The head and neck cancer includes the neoplasias that appear in the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx and the majority is of the epidermoid histological type. World-wide, this is the sixth type of more common cancer, and understands about 6% between all the types of cancer. More than 500,000 new cases and about 300.000 deaths for head and neck cancer are esteem per year. The treatment for head and neck cancer includes surgery, therapy for irradiation and chemotherapy. When the illness is advanced, the treatment is normally with chemotherapy, or followed surgery and radio-chemotherapy. The surgery is the oldest method used as treatment of the cancer, but it is a highly invasive method, being able to cause irretrievable aesthetic injuries, with possible functional alterations. In function of this, some plants come being used in the treatment of the cancer and one of them has attracted scientific interest, the Euphorbia tirucalli L. (E. tirucalli), known popularly as avelóz, used in the phytotherapic treatment of asthma, ulcers, warts and tumors in general. In function of the importance of the antitumoral activity of the latex of the E. tirucalli, including its elements chemical, the present study aims to investigate the influence of this phytotherapic in the tumor cells on the morphology, progression and the metastatization of the cancer. For this will be used the larynx squamous cells carcinoma cell line (Hep-2) and analyzed the morphology, the index of cellular proliferation and the differential genetic expression after the treatment with the E. tirucalli. Thus we will be able to understand a little bit more about the genetic mechanisms and its interactions in different cascades of signaling that this phytotherapic acts.
