All about my mother: image and gender in an anthropological approach

Abstract

I propose in this project to analyze Almodóvars movie "All About My Mother" through visual anthropology and gender theories, with the goal of building an analysis of the "feminine" in the film and how we can perform a reading of the film through visual anthropology. With the outbreak of the feminist movement in the 1970s, gender issues begin to appear in the media and in the audiovisual productions, among them the movies. Then there is a movement to deconstruct the images and roles assigned to female characters in movies, which influence social perceptions that contemporary women have of themselves. The filmography of Pedro Almodóvar contributes in this sense of deconstruction of the feminine images constructed by a patriarchal society, because it presents female characters that clash with the oppressive standards built mainly by classic American film. The methodology will take into account other films from this director in order to build counterpoints. In addition to the bibliographic material and the film material it is necessary to analyze the script and visual elements (sets, costumes).
