Abstract

The inter-relationships observed between the pineal gland and the immune system characterize the immune pineal axis. In order to understand how the activity of pineal gland is modulated during the development of an inflammatory response, our group has described the effect of cytokines on the melatonin production of the gland. The aim of this work is to evaluate the relevance of the crosstalk between the interferon-gamma-induced modulation of the intracellular pathways JAK/STAT and NF-kB on cultured rat pineal glands, regarding hormonal production and the expression of the key enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of melatonin, the arylalkylamine-N-acetyltransferase.
