Abstract

In 1948 and 1949 the entomologists Romualdo Ferreira D'Almeida and Lauro Travassos Filho collected sphingids monthly in the Estação Biológica de Boracéia, Salesópolis, State of São Paulo, resulting in an expressive collection of these insects, which have been deposited in the Museu de Zoologia of the Universidade de São Paulo. The lack of studies about structure and composition of sphingid communities of Atlantic Forest and the possibility of comparisons with data from the 1940's have led to the presentation of this project, which aims to analyze and describe the hawkmoth fauna of this important Atlantic Forest reserve. Aspects of the Sphingidae diversity such as species richness and composition, absolute and relative abundance and equitability will be studied. Sphingids will be monthly sampled for one year, during four consecutive nights in the new moon phase of each month. Analysis procedures that consider only species richness and composition, such as the Jackknife richness estimator and the principal coordinates analysis, will be applied for comparisons with data from the 1940's, for which abundance information is not available. On the other hand, abundance data will be recorded in the samplings carried out during this project, allowing more detailed descriptions and analyses. Thus, methods that take into account both species composition and number of individuals, such as the correspondence analysis and the Whittaker plots, will be employed for this purpose.
